New Years Resolutions

Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution that you can’t keep? I have. I’m guilty of breaking my resolutions almost every year. Why? Because they are unattainable.

There are some resolutions that are realistic, however. Some examples would be to spend more quality time with family and friends, get organized, and find a better job.

Here at Florida Hospital, we can help with finding a better job. Our hospitals offer a supportive work environment that can help you maintain a positive attitude. Our atmosphere is focused around a dedicated team that fully supports our patients’ physiological, spiritual and emotional needs and our nurses are passionate about making a difference in the lives of others. The leadership at Florida Hospital desires employees to reach their full potential by advancing their clinical knowledge and achieving personal satisfaction.

Please consider making your New Year’s resolution to join our team at Florida Hospital.

Merry Christmas from Florida Hospital!

It's hard to believe Christmas is upon us - 2009 has certainly flown by! I hope you are able to slow down and spend some time this holiday season to reflect on the wonderful things that have happened this year. In my family, 2009 had some great high points. I started work at Florida Hospital, celebrated my 1-year wedding anniversary, and made a surprise visit to California for my father’s 60th birthday, just to name a few.

Florida Hospital also celebrated significant milestones this year.

Florida Hospital:
1. Celebrated a successful accreditation visit from the Joint Commission.
2. Added a new Internal Medicine Residency Program.
3. Honored employees who reached 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. years of service at the 45th Annual Service Awards Banquet.
4. Celebrated its 100th Liver Transplant and held the 1st annual Transplant Reunion to celebrate patients, organ donors, physicians, nurses, family and friends.
5. FHTVNews sparked a “Wash Your Hands” phenomenon across all hospital campuses that emphasized patient safety.
6. Employees raised over $120,000 for the American Heart Association Heart Walk.
7. Partnered with the Burnham Institute for Medical Research at Lake Nona to advance Central Florida as a hub for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity research. They also broke ground this year on a medical office building that will house the research facility at the FH Orlando campus.
8. Contributed 2,554 backpacks for the Backpacks for Kids Campaign.
9. Ranked #17 in Orlando Sentinel’s Top 100 Companies for Working Families
10. Celebrated the 1-year anniversary of the Ginsburg Tower which houses the Cardiovascular Institute.
11. Added a new 30,000 sq ft. surgical suite at FH Altamonte and added a new outpatient surgery center at FH East Orlando.
12. Broke ground to expand The Baby Place at Winter Park which will double the size and allow for 3,500 deliveries each year after completion. Celebration Health and FH Kissimmee are also expanding to add patient beds and a medical office building.
13. Launched two great new websites: http://www.floridahospitalnursing.com/ which is designed to enhance communication among team members and the community and http://www.floridahospitalalumni.com/ which is a resource for previous employees to get back in touch with Florida Hospital.

From our Florida Hospital family to yours,
Merry Christmas!

Please share your 2009 milestones below.

Heroes

By now, you might be asking, “What’s this blog title all about?”

Florida Hospital Hires Heroes?
Yes, we do.

We make sure we place the right people into the right positions for a reason. We believe you have the opportunity to touch everyone you come into contact with: patients, families, physicians, co-workers, even strangers walking down the hall.

Your interactions with people have a huge impact on them, and you might not ever know. You are a hero in someone’s eyes.

Each week I will spotlight how our nurses are heroes and inspire people through their passion for nursing.

If you know a nurse who is a hero and has touched you or your family’s lives, or a nurse hero that should be recognized for all they do, please leave a comment below.

Do you want to live to 100?

Do you want to live to 100 years? If you do, then you must visit Florida Hospital's Healthy 100 website.

The main page asks the question, “What will you do, when you’re 100?”. Well, that definitely got me thinking - I guess it’s time to write a bucket list! Do you have a bucket list? Some of the things I would like to do before I reach 100 years are to attend the summer Olympics, learn to fly a plane, swim with dolphins, ride a two-seater bicycle, and raft through the Grand Canyon. I know I cannot do any of those things without staying healthy.

That’s exactly the point of the Healthy 100 website. It gives you health tools to maximize your health and goals to consistently improve. The first thing I did on this website was to fill out the longevity calculator that determines life expectancy based on age, weight, family history, lifestyle choice, stress, etc. The survey took less than 5 minutes, and I can tell you that I can expect to live anywhere from 75.2 (conservative) to 93.5 (generous) years old. My husband also did the calculator, and his life expectancy was higher than mine by 5 years! Well I wanted to know what I can do now to maximize my health so we can spend those years together. The website gave some suggestions: sleep 6-7 hours per night (that I can definitely work on – I never get enough sleep), exercise 3 or more times per week, and maintain an ideal weight.

This website is a neat tool because it is designed for people like you and me. It is a community page intended for you to ask questions, read educational blogs, find healthy recipes, and share your experiences with other individuals with the same objective.

Florida Hospital has a mission to change the way you look at healthcare – we strive to be an organization that creates health instead of merely treating illness. In today’s healthcare environment, we want you to jump-start a health movement throughout Central Florida and beyond that includes people of all cultural and religious backgrounds.

I am so happy to be a part of this organization. Florida Hospital understands that health is a journey that includes its ups and downs, and Florida Hospital wants to be there with you along the way!

During this Christmas season, take time to determine what makes you happy and ask yourself what you want to do at 100 years of age.

Also, please comment and share what you want to do by your 100th birthday! I’d love to hear.

Happy Monday!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. It’s hard to believe the holidays are already upon us. It seems like just yesterday I was watching 4th of July fireworks. Time flies when you’re having fun!

If you’re like me, then you’ve already made your first batch of holiday cookies. Luckily, I do not feel too guilty about eating them because I am doing a holiday workout program through Florida Hospital.

During October, Florida Hospital offered employees a program called “Move It”. It was designed to increase exercise before Thanksgiving and into the holidays. A Wellness Coordinator kept in contact with me and sent tips on how to exercise and eat healthy for the entire month of October. The goal was to get employees to exercise at least 30 minutes a day for 20 days in October. If we met this goal, we were entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate to Florida Hospital’s own Eden Spa – a full service spa. Someone on my team in HR actually won the gift certificate!!! She is rewarding herself with a Warm Stone Message. Florida Hospital is offering the same program for the month of December.

Balance is a part of our Florida Hospital values. We describe balance as harmony in ones professional, personal and community life as well as in one’s own mind, body, and spirit.

In my next post, I will discuss another program called Healthy 100. It’s a program designed to take you on a journey to living longer, healthier, happier lives. For a sneak preview, visit http://www.healthy100.org/.

Welcome to the Florida Hospital Recruitment Blog! For my first post, I thought it would be appropriate to share an amazing story from a patient's family about the skilled and thoughtful caregivers at our hospitals.

Stewardship is one of our values we hold at Florida Hospital. Usually, when we think of stewardship, we think of how we manage our financial resources. However, the story below shows that stewardship is much more than that. It is about living our mission: "To Extend the Healing Ministry of Christ".

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards a few stewards of the mission that Florida Hospital has promised its patients. I have a daughter that on a weekend evening began running a temperature of 104 degrees. This was very traumatic for my family, especially my little girl. After we arrived, my daughter was immediately triaged and the nurse went back and got an order for medicine to bring down the fever.

Shortly after being given meds, we were escorted to a room. It couldn’t have been much longer that ten minutes after we arrived that we were greeted by a wonderful nurse. She did an outstanding job of comforting my family in this crisis. She spent time explaining everything she was going to do my daughter. She assured my wife and me that she was going to provide us with the best care that she can give. She kept us informed of when she was going to start the IV and draw blood for labs and get the results STAT. After the doctor ordered more meds, she sat with us and watched to make sure that my daughter took every drop.

I also would like to pay a big compliment to the physician. He did a great job of explaining why my daughter still had a fever after one week, and assured us that we were on the track to recovery. My wife and I are very appreciative of the care that each one of these people gave us that night. I was extremely pleased with the way everything turned out. God Bless these ambassadors to our mission!”
