Week of Spiritual Renewal

Happy Tuesday! I hope you are having a wonderful week and beginning to see the early stages of spring! The weather in Orlando has been beautiful!

This week is special for Florida Hospital. During Easter week, March 29 – April 2, our Mission Development office has put together a series of themed devotionals for our employees. The theme is “Blessed Are, Encouraging Words from the Healer”. The videos and thoughts are designed to bring encouragement and strengthen our faith.

Our mission, To Extend the Healing Ministry of Christ is evident throughout our hospitals. However, life gets busy with appointments, patients to care for, and deadlines to meet. The chaos can affect different people in different ways. Some people try to over-extend themselves, while others begin to shut down. The purpose of these devotions is to take the time to rest and renew our faith.

To watch the videos, please visit: https://employees.floridahospital.org/wse/

I am always thankful for the spiritual component at Florida Hospital. If you are interested in working in an environment that cares for the rest and renewal of our employees, please visit,

Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children Opening

Happy Friday!
Last week I told you I was going to attend the opening of the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children. This week I have pictures of the event!

Wednesday was the soft opening of the lobby for Florida Hospital employees. I had the chance to tour with my colleagues and view the eye-catching lobby while snacking delicious mini-cupcakes. Thursday, March 11 was the official opening to the public.

As we walked in through the front entrance, we were instructed to follow Tinkerbell's pixie dust which wove us through some neat displays including the themes of the rooms on each remodeled unit. We got to try our hands at the Milton Bradley game “Operation” through a minimally invasive surgery machine which is part of our Nicholson Center for Advanced Pediatric Surgery. We were also introduced to Max and Buddy the Bear, Florida Hospital’s 3-D animated tour guides. They will guide children through a video adventure that addresses theconcerns children may have about procedures.

But, the main attraction of the opening was the amazing lobby designed by Walt Disney Imagineers. Pictures describe the lobby better than words. Click on any of the pictures to enlarge them.

Florida Hospital for Children Update

Hakuna Matata! That’s one of my favorite Disney phrases. It means no worries for the rest of your days. That is exactly how we want our patients to feel after visiting the Florida Hospital for Children.

Florida Hospital has teamed up with Walt Disney to create the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children. This pavilion is part of a $65 million expansion to increase the total number of pediatric beds from 155 to 200 and add a wide range of destination pediatric programs, the Nicholson Center for Advanced Pediatric Surgery, and a dedicated pediatric Emergency Department.

The pavilion (pictured below) was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and is described as an innovative, child-centric environment. The pavilion will include characters from Disney classics like the Little Mermaid, Lion King and the Jungle Book. The 15,000 square-foot pavilion includes a new entrance, lobby, and three-level atrium for pediatric and women’s services. The pavilion will include imagination stations and creative centers for kids to play, which in turn speeds their recovery.

Our Florida Hospital heroes get a sneak peak of the new pavilion before it opens to the public on March 11. I will be sure to include pictures of the employee event lobby opening next week.

The Pediatric Emergency Department opened in fall 2008 and is 10,000 square feet with nine private treatment rooms, interactive child-friendly technology, and Philips Ambient Experience lighting. Below are a few pictures of the new Peds ED including examples of the serene interactive lighting in the rooms.

More Than Compassion

Every so often, our President and CEO, Lars Houmann, sends an email to the entire Florida Hospital family. He sends stories about Florida Hospital patients, family members, and employees. This week, a particular nurse hero stood out in the email and I would like to tell her story below.

Anne* had a patient whose only close family member lived abroad. Anne shared daily updates with the patient’s sister by phone and described the real possibility that the patient may not survive.

As things worsened, the patient’s sister got on a plane to Orlando. She did not know where she would stay, what she would do, or how she could deal with the inevitable about to happen. But Anne took her in as family and said, “stay with me in my home.”

Anne stood by to offer solace and care to the grieving sister. On Anne’s days off she took the sister to the bank to deal with financial matters and to the patient’s former employer to finalize paperwork. Anne and the sister shared pain and memories while packing up the entire patient’s apartment. Utilities were ended and insurance claimed.

Through every step of this sister’s sad journey, Anne was by her side offering transportation, food and friendship. While Anne was at work, her church family stepped in, supporting the sister through the maze of issues needing attention.

When Anne was asked why she unselfishly gave her time, compassion and spirit to help another during a time of need, she simply said, “There was no one else here for her. What was I to do?

Anne is just one of many nurses at Florida Hospital who truly lives our mission,
“To extend the healing ministry of Christ.”
